Guzel Yakhina is a Russian writer and screenwriter with Tatar roots. Her debut novel Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes based on her grandmother's experience, was a great success. It has been translated into more than thirty languages, and a TV series of the same name was also filmed. She won important literary awards, including Big Book literary prize and the Yasnaya Polyana Literary Award.. At the International Book Fair in Moscow, it was declared the best prose work. Yakhina was in the final for the Russian Booker Prize and shortlisted for the EBRD award. Train to Samarkand is her last novel, also based on important events in the history of the USSR.
