Kristian Novak (Baden-Baden, 1979) is a Croatian novelist and sociolinguist. He graduated in Croatian studies and German studies at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, where he received his doctorate in 2011 and worked as an assistant from 2005 to 2012, and from 2021 as an associate professor at the Department of German Studies. In the period 2012–2021. he was employed at the Department of Croatian Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka. He made his debut with the novel Obješeni (2005), and gained the reputation of one of the most noted and most read contemporary Croatian novelists with the award-winning novels Črna mati zemla (2013) and Ciganin, ali najljepši (2016). Both novels were adapted for the theater in 2017. The crime-themed social novel Slučaj vlastite pogibelji (2023) achieved similar success. His works have been translated into Bulgarian, English, Hungarian, Norwegian and Slovenian. He is the author of a number of professional and scientific articles in the field of linguistics in Croatian and German.
